Srivatsa Ramaswami began his studies with Krishnamacharya in 1955, at the age of 16. He continued studying with his teacher until 1988, shortly before Krishnamacharya passed away. Over these three decades of private study, Ramaswami learned the full method of Vinyasa Krama. Alongside the asana (postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises), Krishnamacharya also imparted his knowledge of Vedic chanting, Vedic philosophy and other texts such as the yoga-sutras.
Under Krishnamacharya's guidance, Ramaswami taught yoga for many years at the Kalaksetra School of dance and other institutions in Chennai, as well as teaching therapeutic yoga in hospitals and health centres. He has also become well known in India for his beautifully chanted recordings of the vedas.
Ramaswami is the author of four books: 'Yoga Beneath the Surface', 'The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga', 'Yoga for the Three Stages of Life' and 'Basic Tenets of Patanjala Yoga'. He is currently working on a forthcoming title 'Yoga for the Internal Organs'. Ramaswami teaches around the world, sharing a wide spectrum of Krishnamacharya's yoga teachings: Including both challenging and therapeutic approaches to asana, as well as yoga philosophy, pranayama, mantras and meditation.
