The Tree of Yoga

What we study of yoga in the West is often just one part of a vast tree of knowledge. In India, there are traditionally many branches of yoga. The principal paths each appeal to a different part of us, opening a doorway into yoga for all persuasions:

Jnana Yoga - The yoga of knowledge. Using our intellect to explore reality, we bring our minds closer to the mystery of existence.

Karma Yoga - The yoga of action. Giving ourselves fully to work for the world, we are absorbed totally in the moment of action.

Bhakti Yoga - The yoga of love. In devotion to our beloved we go beyond the feeling of separation and dissolve into love.

Raja Yoga - The yoga of meditation. By journeying inwards, our awareness becomes aware of awareness itself.

Hatha Yoga - The yoga of body and breath. Bringing awareness to our breath, we bring awareness to life. All physical yoga exercises are part of Hatha Yoga. Hatha yoga is a meditation in itself and a support for our practice of all the other paths. With a strong body and calm mind, it is easier to devote our energy to whatever we pursue in life.
