Yoga is a Sanskrit word for union. The aim of yoga is to bring about union of body and mind, resulting in a deep feeling of connection with all that is.
For most of us, this sense of wholeness is a fleeting experience, but one that gives a wonderful sense of joy and freedom. The practice of yoga is a way of bringing this quality to life in us.
There are many ways to enter the state of yoga. Whatever brings us totally into the now, is yoga. This may be music, art, dance, sport or prayer. Anything we do with our full awareness becomes yoga.
The ancient wise men of India devoted their lives to dwelling in the peace of yoga. They developed a complete system of philosophy and practice to make being in the now a way of life. The physical exercises we know today as yoga are only one aspect of an incredibly rich tradition practised in India for thousands of years.
The essential practice of yoga is meditation, a process of bringing awareness to life. Yoga exercises lead the body, breath and mind naturally into meditation, giving us the strength, poise and vitality to live life with awareness and a lightness of being.
